Massage Therapy for TMJ Disorder

TMJ (temporomandibular joint) massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on releasing tension and pain in the muscles and joints of the jaw, face, and neck. The goal of TMJ massage is to alleviate symptoms related to temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), such as pain, clicking or popping sounds in the jaw, and limited mobility.

During a TMJ massage, the therapist may use a variety of techniques to release tension and improve circulation in the muscles and joints of the jaw, face, and neck. These techniques may include deep tissue massage, myofascial release, stretching, and trigger point therapy. The therapist may also use techniques to release tension in the muscles of the scalp, neck, and shoulders, which can contribute to TMJ pain.

TMJ massage can be helpful in treating a variety of conditions, such as:

  • Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD)
  • Teeth grinding and clenching
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Stress and tension-related disorders

It is important to note that TMJ massage should only be performed by a qualified massage therapist who has received specialized training in this modality. The therapist should also work in conjunction with other healthcare providers, such as a dentist or physician, to ensure that the treatment is safe and effective for the individual.

What symptoms can be eased by an intraoral massage?

  • Clicking and/or popping of the jaw
  • Headaches, especially upon waking
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Toothaches due to constant clenching
  • Lockjaw – both closed and open position
  • Chronic jaw pain
  • Limited range of mouth opening

How does a TMJ massage / intraoral craniosacral work?

An intraoral massage therapy works over a period of time to alleviate the tension and sometimes pain in the facial area and around the jaw. While a therapist works on the facial muscles in an effort to alleviate tension in TMJ trigger points, most therapists also incorporate intraoral techniques or massages performed within the mouth itself. This is needed to adequately reach all of the muscles and areas that factor into TMJ pain and dysfunction.
